Meat Packaging Label Options
MATERIALS
Standard Paper
When the surface is relatively smooth and moisture exposure will be minimal, a paper face stock is a cost-effective alternative.
Premium Paper
Customers with higher end or specialty products will often look to metallic materials to convey the premium nature of the product.
Film
For curved surfaces and applications where moisture will be present, a film material is preferred.
Difficult Applications
When packaging is especially lumpy or highly curved, a strong adhesive and especially flexible face stock is needed.
TOPCOATS
Lamination
Lamination protects only the surface of the label. Paper substrates and/or water based/emulsion adhesives are still vulnerable to moisture and chemicals.
Film contract and expand at different rates with temperature changes according to the material used. For outdoor use, lamination and label material should always match.
Lamination increases the thickness and stiffness of the construct and can have a great impact on how well a label can perform on a highly curved/tight mandril surface.
Varnish
Due to the presence of condensation, ice crystals and purge and well as the tendency to stack product, use of a UV varnish is recommended for the meat packaging industry.
Metalized paper and films cannot be corona treated and may sometimes have digital imaging oil residue on the surface. Unfortunately, this residue can cause issues with UV varnish. For these applications, a lamination is preferred.
SPECIALTY LABEL OPTIONS
Promotional Labeling
Occasionally, meat packagers will wish to highlight the meat type, value or other information and will elect to have a bright label in addition to other labels.
Several fluorescent materials are available.
Thermal Labels
Some customers will prefer to produce labels on demand.
While some utilize blank labels, many will opt to have the company logo placed on the label.
